Selling into Australia's summer: spring racing, Black Friday and the opposite season
What the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival says about Australian occasionwear, what the latest spending data shows, and how to time SS27 for Oceania's reversed seasons.

Australia and New Zealand are the clearest example of the opposite season. While Europe and North America move into winter coats, Oceania is heading into summer, Christmas holidays and the long beach break. The first week of November is also the peak of Australia's occasion calendar: the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington. This guide reads the 2026 carnival, the latest spending figures and Forecut's SS27 tracking for designers, brands and manufacturers selling into the region.
The 2026 carnival calendar
The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) runs Fashions on the Field across five race days. Daily Best Dressed and Best Suited winners qualify for a Grand Final on Crown Oaks Day:
- Saturday 3 October: Turnbull Stakes Day, the opening round.
- Saturday 31 October: Victoria Derby Day, which also hosts the Emerging Designer Award.
- Tuesday 3 November: Melbourne Cup Day, with the Lillian Frank AM MBE Millinery Award.
- Thursday 5 November: Crown Oaks Day and the Grand Final.
- Saturday 7 November: Champions Stakes Day, with two new categories, Best Dressed: The Remix and Best Suited: The Remix, for vintage, reworked and rented outfits: an opening for rental and resale brands.
What the VRC forecast and Derby Day showed
The VRC's 'Catwalk to Carnival' guide, published on 28 October, describes a move from minimalism to personality. Its main directions are:
- Texture: fringe, feathers, florals, matte sequins and organza.
- Shape: 1930s dropped waists, loose tunics, sleeveless midi sheaths and off-the-shoulder tailoring.
- Colour: Klein blue, fuchsia, tomato red and butter yellow.
- Millinery: brims, beadwork, pillbox and pork-pie hats.
- Menswear: generous double-breasted suits, pleated higher-waisted trousers and the return of the tie.
Derby Day on 31 October tested that forecast under rain. SSBCrack News reported that black, white and monochrome dominated, with white lace bodices, sheer gloves, corseted dresses, structured white suits, pinstripe tailoring, polka dots, peplum tops and glossy croc-embossed black dresses. Derby Day has a traditional black-and-white dress code, so read it as a separate story from the brighter colours expected for Cup and Oaks days.

How racewear lines up with SS27
Most of the carnival directions match details Forecut already tracks for northern SS27, which means occasion pieces bought now can keep selling into next year:
- Sheer organza overlays and sheer-sleeve dresses (rising): line them for day racing and keep weights light for heat.
- Double-breasted jackets and pinstripe suiting (rising): match the VRC menswear call and the Derby Day tailoring.
- Wide-leg suit trousers (emerging) and pleated midi dresses (rising): the softer, longer shapes behind high-waisted pleats and midi sheaths.
- Fringed hems (peaking): strong for this carnival, but buy with care for later seasons.
- Drop waist with pleated skirt (fading in our SS27 data): the 1930s dropped waist is a race-season story now, so keep it to small, occasion-led runs rather than core SS27 stock.

What shoppers are spending
The market is steady rather than booming. FashionUnited's summary of Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows household spending on clothing and footwear up 4.8% on a year earlier in August 2026 in current prices, or roughly 2% after price rises, although it fell 1.0% from July. Clothing and footwear prices rose 2.6% year on year, below headline inflation of 4.0%. Inside that figure, garment prices fell 2.2% while footwear rose 6.5% and accessories 12.7%. Consumer confidence (ANZ-Roy Morgan) was 74.4, against 89.0 a year earlier.
For brands this suggests discount pressure on clothing and more pricing room in shoes, bags and hats, which is useful in a season where millinery and accessories carry the look. The Black Friday to Cyber Monday weekend is now a major event in Australia: in late 2025 retailers were tipped to take about A$6.8 billion over that period, with Deloitte expecting about 44% of retailers to take part. Plan summer stock to land before late November, not just before Christmas.
Resort and summer: the rest of the calendar
Australian Fashion Week in Sydney shows Resort collections in May. Style Arcade's Resort 27 report named five directions: bi-coastal utility in nylon and raincoat fabrics, ethereal silk-organza sheers, high shine in liquid sequin and georgette, 'surfer perfect' wraps, crochet, raffia and sunset prints, and berry reds. These are the looks for the local summer now and through to February.
- Now to February 2027: racing, Black Friday, Christmas and the summer holidays. Resort 27, swim, linen and crochet sell now.
- March to August 2027: local autumn and winter. Northern AW26 ideas work here, with merino knitwear and practical outerwear for New Zealand and southern Australia; June brings the end-of-financial-year sales.
- September 2027 to February 2028: northern SS27 trends reach Oceania stores, a full season after Europe and North America, along with the 2027 spring racing carnival.
- Adjust rather than just reship: Forecut's data shows a preference for relaxed tailoring, linen, swim and local designer labels, with a tropical north and a cooler, changeable south.
