GSM and fabric weight: a practical guide
What GSM means, typical weights for common garments and why weight matters for season and price.

GSM (grams per square metre) measures fabric weight. It is one of the quickest ways to compare fabrics and brief suppliers clearly.
Typical weights
- Under 80 GSM: voile, chiffon, organza: sheer layers, dupattas.
- 80–130 GSM: poplin, cambric, light linen: shirts and summer kurtas.
- 130–200 GSM: jersey tees, medium linen, light twills.
- 200–300 GSM: sweatshirts, chinos, light denim.
- Over 300 GSM: heavy denim, canvas, coating wools.
Why it matters
Weight affects drape, opacity, warmth, cost and shipping. Specifying GSM avoids surprises when bulk fabric arrives lighter or heavier than the sample.
Seasonal guide
Indian summers call for lighter, open fabrics; winter weddings and northern winters allow heavier silks, velvets and wools.
